The engineering firm GE Hitachi has submitted an alternative proposal based on their Prism fast reactor, which could consume the plutonium as fuel while generating electricity.
However, the Prism design is a sodium cooled reactor, said to have passive safety. I've always felt that liquid sodium doesn't
sound all that safe. But what do I know? (Then again, what do engineers know? They build reactors besides the sea in earthquake zones.)
