John Quiggin's post (and the following comments) predicting a revocation of Brexit early in 2019 makes for interesting reading.
Does sound plausible to me.
I again heard Theresa May on the radio this morning saying that another referendum would be a betrayal of democracy, or some such nonsense.
I still can't get my head around how politicians like her can't get their head around how context matters. The people would actually understand what is at stake now. They obviously did not at the time of the first referendum.
And no Homer, you're just wrong on this one.
who decides if the people understand what they are voting about?
ReplyDeleteIt is a very elitist argument and silly
Parliament will reject the deal, there will be a brexit but without an agreement.
Everyone loses
Homer, anyone with a brain - how is that for elitism - can tell that the British public would now have a grasp of the complexities of Brexit that they did not have at the time of the first referendum.
ReplyDeleteYou're just denying reality if you think you can mount an argument against that point.
Even (some) libertarians are arguing for a second referendum. And as said at a Reason blog:
ReplyDelete"If referenda are a legitimate mechanism for making political decisions, then it is also legitimate for them to be overruled by new referenda. Those who live by the referendum sword risk dying by it."

what evidence do you have that the electorate has changed their mind?
ReplyDeleteIn a democracy they cannot.
what evidence do you have that the electorate has changed their mind?
ReplyDeletePolls.
In a democracy they cannot.
What?
those same polls that predicted a yes victory hmm
ReplyDeleteNo you just cannot vote on any issue until you get the vote you think is the best.
The poms voted and voted no.
stupid yes, ill informed possibly but thats life.tough
You can bet your last pound that the "remainers" would not rely on polling this time being right that their side will win.
ReplyDeleteAgain, you make a mere assertion that you just "can't do that".
A government can, and there is no logical reason why it cannot.
There’s been a referendum and a general election ( that the leave party won ) so far.
ReplyDeleteWhy are we still arguing when the decision is already made, twice.
Labor went to the election saying they would support Brexit, did they not? Just argued they would negotiate better. The public didn't really have a choice.
ReplyDeleteThe electorate surmised, and we’re later proved correct, that Labor were full of shit when they said they supported Brexit.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Jeremy Corbyns Brexit plan was what exactly?
