Strange alignments

From the ABC:

Right-wing podcaster Steve Bannon and left-wing US senator Bernie Sanders have spoken at a Washington event on the dangers of AI and the need for regulation.

US President Donald Trump phoned into a separate event to reinforce his opposition to intervening and repeat his claim that AI warnings represented a "hoax".

All sorts of people are weighing in now, from Bezos's paper's editorial board saying "meh, companies should just regulate the dangers themselves to avoid being sued"  to a kinda libertarian Shermer:

As a good rule of thumb, we know that Trump has terrible instincts, and libertarians never want to do anything useful for the common good, so if there is side that is likely to be wrong, the money is on them...

Update:  Joe Rogan has thoughts. 🙄

The rate determining step for AI is electricity production. The Chinese make electricity at one fifth the cost of the Americans.

For control purposes and for pseudo-religious reasons the American elite has created this uncompetitive data centre bubble.

That’s the backdrop to this collaboration here. It’s all rent-seeking and ass-covering. So the sponsors of these two have got them talking all this smack but what they are really after is a kind of cartel and roundabout ways of limiting the Chinese.

I find AI very useful. I have been able to sort out all this physics stuff without paying a dollar. So I don’t really see how their business model will work.
