For Good Friday

A symbol of the noblest of traditions | theage.com.au

Not a bad attempt here at a response to the modern distaste for the idea of sacrificial atonement.

An interesting article but in its own way as inaccurate as the atheist tracts it rightly decries.

Substitutionary atonement really only became the dominant way of Christian understanding of the saving work of Jesus leading on from Anselm onwards. Prior to that the Catholic church did quite well without a dominant mode of undestanding of the mechanism of salvation. Pushing atonement through feudal eyes gave us the fossilised version generally accepted as normative.

One reading of the Gospels is that Jesus opposed atonement as a concept entirely like many of the OT prophets.

Happy Easter no matter how the crucifixion saves us! We have the Vigil celebration tonight which is always very joyful after the solemnities of the last two days.

BTW any reaction to Pells latest statements backing the Pope on condoms and AIDs.
Marr in the Fairfax media was not very kind but pretty much on the money.
