The argument put by this IPA wanker is not new - it's the routine, conspiracy heavy, argument that has been deployed against climate change action and environment protecting regulation generally. Namely, that you can't believe warnings of danger and harm to human life and nature - because it's really just all a front for enforcing socialism.
And I am also curious about this paragraph from the article:
It is not surprising then that, far from recommending revolution, the pandemic has reinforced the value of traditional goods. Stay-at-home orders, for example, might not be quite so harsh were more people homeowners than renters of small apartments. The alienation of social distancing might not be so severe were more adults married with children. Expert rule might be more effective had the academy and media class not been engaged in generations-long ideological mission creep. Perhaps borders and self-sufficiency might also have renewed credibility now that globalism has gone viral. This seems quaintly dogmatically conservative for someone from the IPA: he seems to be against relaxing planning laws to build whatever developers want; thinks more people should be married with children; and is dubious about globalism? Has he run this past Gina Rinehart, given that she doesn't have much of a business left if she can't ship away gigantic chunks of Australian dirt to other parts of the globe.

The IPA have always been a joke. They have had only one quality author in my lifetime and that was Ron Brunton. The rest are all intellectual wantobes.
Post GFC They had no idea of how European nations categories structural and cyclical deficits. That is but one example.
At least in the past the CIS had intellectual ooph which unfortunately they lost.
no-one but no-one wears a bowtie
Hey Jason, I take it you noticed that even your old boss Ergas jumped into criticising the economists who are urging no hurry to ease COVID restrictions?
Shutdowns with no geographic nuance are a very foolish way to handle this. If the statistics say we need shutdown and social distancing in Bondi thats fine. But why is there shutdown even where we don't need it? And why are we being denied the antidote? So there is plenty to complain about during this shut-down.
Since we will not get proper treatment if we catch the virus, thanks to the usual suspects, that means we need to rely on supplements and diet. Quercetin (purple onions) ECGC(green tea) canned oysters and this sort of thing. These supplements cost money. So we need to get the economy open where its geographically prudent to do so. So we can fix ourselves up because these supplements cost money.
There is no need for a shutdown in North Queensland and the Northern Territory for example. So why is it happening?
I think this fellow Bushnell must be right. People must be gunning to ruin the economy. Strong measures are needed but they have to be nuanced. Locking down like this is not nuanced. It deserved maybe a couple of weeks and then the disaggregation should have started.

This is just David Stockman looking at the numbers. I like what the leader of Madagascar has done. He's put together a preventative medication, and he's getting the kids back to school. Their department of applied research has gotten this happening in record time as compared to the CSIRO who has proven to be utterly useless in this crisis.
"Hey Jason, I take it you noticed that even your old boss Ergas jumped into criticising the economists who are urging no hurry to ease COVID restrictions?"
They are just useless. They have identified themselves as the magical thinking economists. The something-for-nothing Keynesian economists. Makes me think I should have spent two more years in University so that I could be one of the people who DIDN'T sign this ridiculous bipolar letter. We should be PROGRESSING with our measures, economic and medical. Not taking sides between two wrong choices.
Jason you didn't sign did you? If you did try and take your signature back. Because even though all efficacious medical treatments are being blocked and demonised right now, we won't be able to recreate that history down the track. And every fool who put his signature to this one is going to look very bad in retrospect.
