Greg Sargent's column on Mitch McConnell's attempt to convince every single Senator to not object to the Democrat electors in January explains it as well as any. (He fears that if forced to vote, the Trump base will be able to identify specifically those who have abandoned Trump, and want to punish them.)
I would think it hilarious if dimwit curly hair Rand Paul ruins this plan.

I would love some republicans to vote against the electors choice.
I think McConnell's concern is that if a large number of senators object it signals the possible splitting of the GOP. Trump is obviously furious with the GOP, the SC, and anyone who disagrees with him. I think he is planning to create a breakaway party. That will be completely different from the Tea Party because now they are convinced the election was stolen.
John, I am sure Trump would welcome a breakaway party based on him as its leader (and there are plenty of calls on that Parler app for it, I gather), but Trump himself is not likely to devote time or energy to organising it. He's too lazy and just wants to play golf or tweet all day. But if someone like Bannon said he would organise one for Trump, and hand leadership of it to him on a plate in a couple of months' time, sure, I reckon Trump would go for it. The thing is, all these flunkies who would do that now have legal troubles of their own to confront and are too distracted to be doing that.
And if it takes longer than a few months to organise, the signs of Trump's post-presidency legal troubles of his own might start to make it look like a pointless exercise anyway.
You are right about Trump being too lazy to organize it and others might. I hadn't considered the legal problems they may face. If that results in convictions my schadenfreude will be maximized.
Yes it would appear Trump has a lot of legal problems.
no breakaways however. you would split the vote and hand victory to democrats.
Terump is very stupid but not that very stupid
Not Trampis,
Not about stupid it is about narcissism. Trump has no loyalty to the GOP and will do anything to maintain his support base.
