Also is a great example of why I am completely uninterested in it

It's weird, isn't it?   How cricket fans seemingly celebrate the boring aspects of it.  (Which, by my reckoning, is about 98% of the playing time.)

I don't even understand how it's considered a sport. what's the specific athletic ability involved in cricket? the ability to withstand boredom? to stand around all day waiting for a ball?

Well, it may not be exactly an athletic ability, but I can see how it takes some bravery as a batsman to be confident that the ball is not going to kill you.

But this also make me feel it is a stupid game for insisting that such a dangerously heavy and inflexible ball be used in the first place.

I mean, how many baseball injuries are there, yet they bash that ball a long distance. (I just checked - just one major league player died from a pitched ball - in 1920!)

Cricket, on the other hand, has many examples of death by ball.
