On Twitter, David Roberts is talking about looking at episodes from the early seasons of Game of Thrones, and noting how good they were compared to the (apparently) shockingly terrible later seasons - especially the last.

Yeah thats exactly it. It started off the best television ever. Deadwood never let us down. But when Game Of Thrones started it was better even than Deadwood. And then the wheels started falling off. As depicted in that drawing pretty much perfectly.
It would be worth your while to go back and carefully watch the first four seasons. Just better to leave off at the end of season 4. Even though there may be some good ideas in season five you don't want that heartache of seeing them bugger up such a good thing.
