I mean, I knew that, generally speaking, the Taiwanese were pretty keen on all things Japanese and considered their occupation as being pretty benevolent. But I didn't know this...
Steve the movie is about the original indigenous people and their experience with the Japanese during the 1930s. It was just as bad under the Chiang Kai‐shek.
Maybe "benevolent" was too strong a word. I see the Wiki entry on the Japanese colonisation period does list a lot of violent uprisings over the period.
But overall, I think it's fair to say that modern Taiwanese think highly of Japanese culture and credit the colonial period as a modernising time for the country.
I think highly of Japanese culture too. Note there is no situation so excellent that a real estate boom can’t destroy it. The Japanese bounced back more quickly from insane American terrorist bombing than they did from their real estate boom. That’s not happenstance it’s a general rule.

The movie, Warriors of the Rainbow, certainly doesn't paint the picture of benevolent Japanese occupation!
