The tech bros' new clothes

Good to see this explained succinctly:

Sounds right. Once network effects are identified the money men can get unlimited credit from deep state types and take over.

Microsoft created many millionaires among the staff because of shares accrued through employment. Bill Gates giving away billions is a sociopath? Bollocks.

Microsoft was small fry but they worked their butts off and produced poor DOS and operating systems but they kept going. Dr. DOS was an excellent package but in their desperation for market share DD 7 was prematurely released and that signaled downfall for DD. IBM with gazillions the bank launched OS Warp but that also failed. Geoworks, Lotus 123, and Word Perfect were very competitive with MS programs but stalled in development and lacked the commercial and marketing sense of Microsoft. Microsoft expanded to incorporate into Windows software that before we had to buy and that was expensive. How is that sociopathic and monopolistic? The security protection in W11 is so good most don't install other security software. In the last W11 update, 24H2, there is a basic video editor. How is that sociopathic?

Hi John: yes, I was thinking of saying that I thought his take on Gates sounded too tough. Interestingly, Gates turned up on Youtube (talking to someone from Wall Street Journal) on the weekend, explaining (in part) the reason he said he was "quite impressed" (or something like that) after a recent lengthy dinner with Trump. Turns out he got to speak about all the international health initiatives that have been important to Gates, and he reckons Trump appeared interested and as if he could see their value. (Surprised if true, but who knows?)

Still, this is typical of Trump, it seems - he can do what he thinks he needs to do when with someone, then in a different arena take a completely opposite tack. You could never tell what is genuinely going on in his brain, and what ideas will stick and what won't.

In any event, I couldn't fault Gates (who did put his money into supporting Harris) for trying to influence Trump in the fields important to him, and I still think he is the "pick" of the tech billionaires.

Btw, on Microsoft in the 1980's - I was a little peeved that they did deals with the government to get them to convert totally to Word - and part of the conditions was that all alternative wordprocessing programs (really, Wordperfect) had to be deleted.

I, in fact, still use a version of Wordpecfect to this day to draft certain documents. (Of course, mostly I use Word, as I have to with other software - but if I have to draft a document from scratch and sharing it doesn't matter much, I still prefer Wordperfect for its far easier handling of formatting - especially headers and footers, for which Word drives me nuts.) It's funny when I tell people around my age this, and they say "what? the old DOS blue screen program?" People don't know how it converted to a window program and was updated every few years ever since. Mind you, the updating has slowed down in recent years - and the version I use is from 2008! But I see that the latest version is 2021, and costs $171 to "upgrade" to it. I feel tempted to, just to keep the product alive. It must be hanging by a thread...

Wow Steve. I had no idea Wordperfect still existed. I'm using a very old version of Microsoft Office and won't pay for a newer version so soon will be forced to use Open Office.
