Two things:
a. a lengthy article at NYT talking about various bad or highly questionable things that have happened at various places offering various drug experiences for either spiritual or mental health advancement. As one might expect, it's a field where the (shall we say) "less than ethical" operator can thrive.
b. I watched a video by a British guy recently and thought it wasn't a bad summary of some of the key aspects of three key religions, so I then watched today his video in which he talked about his experience with ayahuasca taken at a place in Peru. (Seemed like a moderately "up market" place he went to, with lots of supervision. He didn't go for treatment of any particular problem, but just as a mind expanding/spiritual sort of experience.)
Anyway, while he doesn't exactly regret the experience, he also explained that quite a lot of the last two of three drug trips were spent thinking he was literally dying. It's not as if he was enjoying the prospect of dying, either.
The guy is clearly into spiritual/expanded consciousness stuff generally speaking, so he was primed to be impressed by the experience. But he said in comments to the video that he hesitates recommending ayahuassca to others, as was so intense and unpleasant for long stretches. He also had underestimated the intensity of the "purging" (vomiting) that comes with the drug.
I will therefore not be making my way there to partake any time soon...
