As for climate scientists in semi-supporting ER: they know that the official position of the group in terms of targets are completely unachievable, but they feel that anything that seems to help political action in the right direction is at least not worth attacking. if there really is a danger of 'extinction' there is a simple solution - nuclear which doesn't rely on wishy washy hopeless expensive unrealiable technologies like solar and wind. so they must not really believe what they are saying.
all this hysteria has had the opposite effect on me - I too am wondering where all the strong evidence for these very strong claims is
